Welcome to the 48th Edition of the More Than A Nice Scent

Hello fragrance friends!

I’ll admit it: I stole Clinique Happy’s grapefruit accord. Not literally - but I studied it, transformed it, and turned it into something new.

“Don’t copy - remix meaning and feeling.”

This issue is a masterclass in creative theft: how one juicy accord helped me find my voice. And how you can remix it into something that’s completely your own.

Warm regards,
Scott

How I Stole Happiness: Your Guide to Fragrance Clarity

I should be fine-tuning my book's "Zesty & Energizing" fragrance chapter. Instead, I'm writing about happiness. Because I want to show you exactly how one iconic fragrance mastered emotional clarity.

Clinique Happy launched in 1997 with a simple goal: make people feel good. Not sophisticated. Not mysterious. Just happy!

If you've never smelled it, imagine: bright, sunny grapefruit and orange that actually smell juicy, not synthetic. Layer in some lily of the valley, freesia and mimosa for an uplifting floral touch. Then some clean white woods and musks to round out this clean, optimistic perfume.

A scent that makes you want to smile before you even know why. This wasn't accident - it was masterful Storyscenting. Few perfume names are as direct and inviting as Happy. Everything from the name to the ads was designed to make you smile. And it worked.

It launched in 1997, during my perfumer training. Back then, I had no idea fragrance could capture a feeling so clearly. Now, looking back, I see how this fragrance perfectly captured everything EFD means to me.

Think happiness can’t be bottled? Think again. I’ll show you exactly how to do it.

But How Do You Capture Happiness in a Bottle?

Clinique wanted to sell more than just a nice scent.

They wanted to sell happiness.

Before Happy, perfumes mostly promised elegance or luxury - not feelings.

But how do you know if a perfume really makes people happy?

Clinique partnered with IFF, one of the first fragrance houses to study scent and emotion. IFF developed a tool called Mood Mapping -something I explored in detail back in Newsletter #25. Instead of asking testers, “Do you like this fragrance?” they asked, “How does this fragrance make you feel?” People picked emotions like happy, calm, or irritated.

Without knowing the fragrance’s name or concept, testers kept choosing the same feeling: “happy.”

Clinique didn’t just create a fragrance. They created a mood. And they sold a promise. A promise they knew they could keep. Because they had proof.

Think about that. They made a scent so clear that people knew it was 'happy' without being told. To me, that’s exactly what EFD is all about: creating fragrances that speak directly to our hearts, without needing explanation.

Why I Couldn't Resist "Stealing" That Grapefruit Accord

Happy's grapefruit accord - I loved it!

I studied how that bright, juicy note could spark instant joy. I was so impressed by it. I knew I had to "steal" it.

But here's the thing about creative theft. Great perfumers don't copy. They borrow, transform, and create something new.

And that's exactly what Clinique Happy inspired me to do.

So when my junior perfumer's exam came around, I knew exactly what to create.

I created a fragrance base called Clarity. A fragrance base is a unique character-giving compact fragrance that we use as an ingredient in other perfume formulas.

Why Clarity? Because I built it around Claritone, a special captive from H&R (now Symrise), where I trained. Claritone reminded me of grapefruit's natural juicy brightness, mixed with a fresh hint of clary sage.

But I didn't stop there.I layered Claritone with sparkling grapefruit oil and sunny orange oils. Then I added a bold dose of Floropal - think rhubarb, grapefruit zest with a touch of fresh cypress all in one ingredient.

Then came the masterstroke. The tiniest touch of Grapefruit Mercaptan. It's a super high-impact material. Get the dose wrong, and your whole formula will stink like rotten eggs. But get it just right, and the accord bursts to life. Juicy, vibrant, mouth-watering, and photorealistic.

To finish, I rounded it off with an orange blossom facet built around Methyl Anthranilate, adding depth and sweet warmth.

The result? An amazing citrus base inspired by Happy, but uniquely my own.

Because that’s how fragrance creation works: We study, we borrow, we transform, and then we create something authentically new.

That's how we "steal like an artist."

Now It's Your Turn to "Steal" and Create

You've seen how Clinique Happy taught me to creatively "steal" clarity.

Now it's your turn.

Grab your notebook. You're about to design your own grapefruit accord, perfectly capturing your personal summertime happiness.

But remember, you're not copying. You're making it your own.

Think of this as your perfumer's toolkit. Each of the following ingredients serves both a technical purpose and an emotional one. That's what makes EFD different from traditional fragrance creation.

Step One: Build Your Emotional Core

Start with these three materials to create that juicy, smile-inducing foundation:

  • Grapefruit Oil (Instant Joy): Fresh and bright. Makes people feel energized and alive right away. For happiness that feels lively and natural.
  • Methylpamplemousse (Bold Happiness): Synthetic grapefruit that's stronger and longer-lasting. For happiness that feels confident and powerful.
  • Corp Pamplemousse (Deep Joy): A super powerful grapefruit material.  Adds realism, fullness, and depth. For happiness that feels complete and authentic. All you need is a super small trace.

Experiment by trying different proportions. Maybe you prefer the natural spark of real grapefruit—or perhaps you're drawn to the bold punch of the synthetic alternatives. I suggest creating at least two versions to compare. This is your moment to find your personal style.

Step Two: Add Your Special Touch

Now pick just one of these special ingredients to give your grapefruit accord a modern personality. Think of this step as choosing the exact emotion you wish to express:

  • Glycolierral (Calm Joy): Soft green and milky. Creates a creamy, fig-leaf softness that transforms grapefruit from energizing to nurturing. Ideal for evoking serene happiness.
  • Paradisamide (Adventure Joy): Think juicy tropical fruits like guava and crisp rhubarb. Adds a sparkling twist that transforms grapefruit into something playful and adventurous.
  • Magnolan (Kind Joy): A beautiful link between grapefruit and white florals. Light, airy, and watery. Smells like a gentle blend of magnolia and peony. Perfect for expressing kindness and quiet joy.
  • Ambermax (Proud Joy): Rich, warm woody-amber with a powerful presence. Adds depth and sophistication, transforming grapefruit into a fragrance that evokes confidence and pride.

Step Three: Ground It with Natural Touches

Finish your accord with just one of these ingredients to give your grapefruit blend a natural, authentic feeling:

  • Black Currant Bud (Tangy Pop): Adds a sour-green tease, keeping things interesting. Prevents your accord from becoming predictable.
  • Pink Pepper (Hot & Happy): Adds warmth and complexity to the top note. Creates an "excitement” effect.
  • Petitgrain Oil Paraguay (Elegant Structure): Natural bitter-green notes like from grapefruit leaves and twigs. Adds structure and a touch of classic elegance.

Step Four: Trust Your Nose (and Your Heart)

Now it's all up to you.

Blend, explore, and trust your instincts.

Write down exactly how each experiment makes you feel. Remember, the goal isn't perfection - it's emotional clarity.

You'll know when you've found your blend. Because it'll feel like you.

Here's the Real Secret to Finding Your Creative Voice

Remember this: There’s no right or wrong way to blend these materials. The goal isn’t perfection - it’s discovery.

Each time you experiment, pause and ask yourself:

  • “How does this make me feel?”
  • “Who else might love feeling this way?”

That's how you move from copying to creating.

That's how you find your own voice.

Because happiness doesn't come in a one-size-fits-all package. Your version of joy might be calm and peaceful. Someone else’s might be bold and thrilling. Yet another person's might feel warm and comforting.

The more you explore these emotional experiences, the better you'll understand what truly makes people smile.

And that deeper understanding is exactly what transforms you from perfumer into EFD Storyteller.

So go ahead. Steal a little happiness.

Make it uniquely yours.
