Have you ever wondered why certain fragrances have the power to stop you in your tracks?
Just one quick smell of a scent can flood our minds with intense emotions and vivid memories. Scents can transport us to places we once visited or remind us of loved ones we haven't seen in years.
The warm, comforting smell of vanilla might trigger memories of your grandma baking cookies when you were little. For me, the scent of tobacco is a direct link to my grandfather and the cigar boxes he gave me to keep my toys and baseball cards in. For others, the scent of lavender might evoke calming and relaxing memories, and the fruity, sweet smell of coconut might remind them of a sunny beach holiday. Like a mental flashback, a quick sniff of a scent can trigger forgotten memories. These personal scent memories are not just powerful, they are deeply personal and unique to each of us.
Understanding these personal scent memories opens up a world of creative possibilities in perfumery.
While personal scent memories can be powerful, how can we use this fragrance superpower to evoke meaningful memories to make perfumes that people will love?
On one level, it's easy. We can use well-known scent associations like the invigorating aroma of freshly brewed coffee to remind people of cozy cafes. However, such basic fragrances sometimes leave the wearer wanting more and might not be relevant to their fragrance story. This is where the real creativity comes in, using scent memory as a tool to craft unique and emotionally powerful perfumes that truly resonate with the wearer.
When people expect more than a simple single-note fragrance to express their individuality and uniqueness, we can create more complex creations like fine fragrances. But how do we know what kinds of memories a multi-faceted perfume will evoke in someone?
Connecting the Dots: Iconic Fragrances, Memories, and Emotions
I believe we can connect the dots between iconic fragrances, memories, and the emotions that people want to experience. Think about iconic perfumes like Chanel No.5, Calvin Klein's Eternity, Davidoff's Cool Water, Estée Lauder's Pleasures, and Dior Sauvage worn by individuals we love, respect, and have inspired us. Indirectly, these fragrances represent the qualities we admire in others and wish to express ourselves.
Remember: people don't buy fragrances; they buy better versions of themselves. When we smell a fragrance that reminds us of someone we admire or aspire to be like, it takes on a powerful emotional significance - it has emotional value. This is why I believe we can create more impactful fragrances by understanding the emotional associations iconic scents evoke.
Case Studies:
Let's examine two iconic fragrances that captured the zeitgeist of their eras. These legendary scents embodied society's dreams and mirrored the emotional hopes, moods, and personality traits of their wearers.
Chanel No. 5, for instance, revolutionized perfumery with its abstract blend of aldehydes and floral notes. This groundbreaking perfume captured and helped define the emotional essence of the era's spirit of female empowerment, evoking feelings of elegance, liberation, and sophistication.
Dior Sauvage's fresh, spicy, and woody notes mirror the spirit of modern masculinity. This modern icon evokes feelings of confidence, freedom, and strength. It captures the essence of authenticity and raw elegance, making it a perfect match for those who thrive on new experiences and daring challenges.

By taking advantage of our positive memories and associations with iconic perfumes, we can design new fragrances that will add deep emotional value to people's lives.
Here's an approach to consider:
- Identify your target consumer's lifestyle, preferences, and desired emotional state.
- Choose an iconic fragrance family that aligns with their archetype.
- Craft your signature scent using the iconic fragrance as inspiration, tailoring the notes to fit your customer's emotional fingerprint.
Now, let me share how I use iconic fragrance emotional associations as a starting point in my creative process.
My Creative Process:
I love creating something from nothing. That's why I often start my new formulas with a blank page. Starting with a clear picture of the target customer's emotional fingerprint, I pick a few materials that best capture their emotional essence.
For example, when I craft a fragrance for Joyful Optimists, people who seek joy, positivity, and a sense of wonder in their lives. I might begin with materials reflecting energy and clarity, such as lemon, green tea, and Hedione. Then, one step at a time, I slowly build around these materials with complementing and bridging fragrance notes to form accords, structures, and themes that I hope will tell the target customer's scent story.
Speeding Up Creativity
However, as a professional perfumer, I am also working on dozens of projects simultaneously and to short deadlines—that's why sometimes I have to work effectively and fast.
One way of speeding up the creation process is to select a successful formulation I have worked with in the past and use it as my starting point. So, not always, but often, I will use a successful iconic perfume as my inspiration. This trick saves time by avoiding unnecessary initial trials to achieve harmony, good fragrance performance, and stability. It also allows me to take advantage of the emotional associations the target customer may already have with the iconic fragrance. And, it's an excellent way to increase the chance that the fragrance will be liked - and maybe even loved.

Imagine you are asked to create a body lotion fragrance designed to wrap Sentimental Souls—people who cherish warm memories and love scents that remind them of cozy, happy times. This fragrance should evoke memories of baking cookies with loved ones, making you feel safe, happy, and nostalgic.
Thierry Mugler's Angel, with its blend of sweet and warm notes like vanilla, chocolate, and caramel that create a sense of warmth and indulgence, would be an excellent starting point for your new creation.
The rich, inviting aroma of chocolate evokes indulgence and warmth. Sweet, welcoming honey boosts the sense of comfort and coziness. Smooth caramel adds sweetness that brings back childhood memories, making you feel nostalgic and happy. Nutty praline enhances warmth and comfort, while soothing vanilla, reminiscent of baking cookies, fosters a deep sense of safety and happiness.
Think about the people you admire who wore Angel—perhaps, like me, you associate them with memories of warmth, elegance, and nurturing presence. By capturing Angel's iconic emotional essence, you create a delicious fragrance that provides the emotional needs of Sentimental Souls, making it something they really love in their everyday life.
