Your challenge:

Define Yourself Through Scent

Imagine if your life story could be told through a collection of fragrances. What would these scents say? How would they smell? Which perfumes would represent the most important parts of your life? What secrets would they reveal about you and your dreams?

These questions are more than philosophical – they help us bridge the gap between our personal experiences and professional fragrance design. Today, I'm excited to share with you a concept that I call: "Scent Story."

This idea is a powerful tool for self-discovery. It helps us understand the deep, often subconscious, connections between our life experiences and the scents we love. And for aspiring emotional fragrance designers, it's the first step towards developing "Scent Sense" – the ability to create scents that connect deeply with others.

Not only will your Scent Story let you see your fragrance choices in a new light, but it's also the beginning of understanding the essence of emotional fragrance design. Who knows? It might even help you start to see patterns, uncover hidden meanings, and predict future chapters of your – or someone else's scent story.

But here's the truly exciting part: this is just the beginning. The Scent Story method is a tiny sneak peek into my EFD Framework that I'll reveal in More Than A Nice Scent, A Perfumer's Perspective on Emotional Fragrance Design. This framework goes beyond notes and accords, beyond likes and dislikes, to the very heart of why we love our favorite fragrances.

So, if you're ready, I challenge you to take the Scent Story challenge. Keep reading to discover more about the power of your scent story.

Here's your challenge...

What is a Scent Story?

A Scent Story is a carefully picked collection of 5-10 fragrances that help tell the story of your life. This collection goes beyond just your favorite perfumes. It's about the scents that symbolize your life's key moments, memories, changes, or phases. Think of your Scent Story as writing your life story with the emotional power of scents. Each fragrance is a chapter in that story.

Write your scent story

Here's how to craft your own Scent Story:

1. Reflect on Your Journey: Think about the fragrances you've worn and enjoyed at different stages of your life.

2. Choose Your Chapter Scents: Select 5-10 fragrances that represent key "chapters" in your life story. These could be:

  • The perfume you wore on your first date
  • The fragrance that makes you feel most confident
  • The scent that remind you of your childhood

These aren't just your nice scents – they're symbols of important moments in your life story.

3. Write Your Scent Story: Write a description for each fragrance. Explain its significance in your journey and the emotions or memories it evokes. Why you loved it. How did it make you feel? (Prompt question: please suggest five more questions here).

4. Create Your Collection: Collect samples of your chosen fragrances and scent products to create a physical representation of your Scent Story.

5. Share Your Story: Consider sharing your Scent Story with close friends and loved ones. It's a uniquely personal way to let them get to know you with the power of scent.

Expect more good stuff: Excited about creating your Scent Story but still not sure where to start? In the final book, I'll share with you a Scent Journey Guide – your personal guide with prompts, and more reflective questions to help you uncover the hidden emotional connections in your fragrance experiences. This tool will help you map your scent memories and write a insightful Scent Story.text here...

The Power of Your Scent Story

Writing your Scent Story is more than just a fun exercise. It's a powerful tool for self-discovery, personal growth, and developing your skills as an emotional fragrance designer. Here's why it's so important:

  • Self-Reflection and Identity: Your Scent Story helps you think about your life and the role scents have played in it. The fragrances you choose become a way to show who you are and tell your personal story.
  • Emotional Intelligence: By connecting scents to specific feelings and experiences, you learn more about your emotional responses to fragrances. This also helps you understand and relate to others' scent experiences, which is key to designing fragrances that make strong emotional connections.
  • Expanding Your Scent Sense: As you explore your emotional responses to different fragrances, you're building a 'vocabulary' of fragrance-emotion connections. This will help you create scents that evoke specific desired emotions in others.
  • Mindful Fragrance Choices: Understanding your scent story can help you make more intentional, meaningful fragrance choices in the future, both for yourself and in your designs.

Doing this exercise will help you develop what I call "Scent Sense" – the ability to create scents that evoke specific desired emotions in others. As you write your Scent Story, you're creating a mental library of emotional scent associations. This is what I like to call your "personal scent reflection library" – the emotional palette that will assist you in designing fragrances that tell stories that touch people's hearts.

As you craft your Scent Story, you'll begin to appreciate the emotional impact of fragrances more. You'll start to recognize the artistry and emotion in scents you may have overlooked before. Every time you identify why a specific scent has had a positive emotional impact on you, you're gaining insight into how scents can trigger emotions universally. That rich aroma of coffee that energizes you each morning? It's not just a personal preference – it's a potential universal emotional trigger that many people share.

Remember, emotional fragrance designers don't just create nice scents –we create fragrance experiences that people love. Writing your Scent Story is your first step into this world of emotion-driven scent design.

Your Invitation to Scent Self-Discovery

So, my fragrance friend, I invite you to take on the Scent Story challenge. Reflect on your life, and start noting, writing, and collecting the scents that tell your unique story.

As you take on this challenge, know that you're laying the groundwork for a more meaningful understanding of perfumery – a new, exciting and more impactful way of creating that we will explore in the final book.

Stay tuned for more fragrant insights and challenges. Trust me, this is just the beginning!

Warm regards,

Scott
