Today, we're going to dig into what makes certain fragrances so special. We'll talk about how scents can make us feel good in the moment and even help us grow and feel more confident over time. And we'll explore how the perfumes and scented products we choose can tell a story about who we are.
This chapter is all about understanding why we love certain scents so much and how they become more than just nice smells. They become part of our lives and our stories.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks for being part of this journey with me!
With Warm Regards,
Scott

The Rough Draft:
Capturing Hearts Through Emotional Value (Part One):
A fragrance is never just a fragrance. It's a memory, a feeling, a part of who we are.
More than Just Products
Creating emotional, long-lasting bonds between products and consumers is crucial in today's market, where we have almost limitless choices.
Brands fight for your attention, each promising unique benefits and experiences. But despite the abundance of choice, we find ourselves becoming loyal customers of certain products.
What drives this loyalty?
The answer lies in our emotional connection to our favorite products. This emotional bond is not just desirable; it's a necessity in today's consumer landscape. Because when there are so many options, our feelings help us choose. We're not just buying a product; we're buying feelings, a connection, a piece of our desired identity.
This emotional bond transforms us from casual buyers into loyal customers.
So, how do brands create this connection? By designing products and experiences that don't just meet our needs but also touch our hearts.
Think about a perfume. We're buying more than a nice scent; we're buying it for the feelings it gives us - the memories it brings back, the self-image it helps us express. When a product does this, it's not just something we buy; it becomes a part of our lives, our stories.
These feel-good products capture our hearts.
A Pathway to Happiness
Emotional fragrance design, at its core, is a form of 'Positive Design.' It's about creating perfumes and scented products that contribute to our happiness (i.e., evoke good vibes), leading to what can be termed 'Product-mediated positive emotional experiences.'
Fragrances have a unique power - they can lift our spirits and make us feel good. This power manifests in two ways:
First, scents can change how we feel in a heartbeat.
Think of your favorite perfume or a scented candle; their scents can help you unwind, distress, and bring a smile to your face. Suddenly, you feel better. This is fragrances' direct, immediate impact, influencing our emotional state in the here and now.
So, scents don't just smell nice; they have the power to turn your day around.
But there's more to the story - fragrances can also make a lasting impact on your life.
Perfumes and scented products can help us grow, feel more confident, and connect with others. For example, a scent that reminds you of a good memory can boost your confidence. Or, a new fragrance can signal a fresh start in your life. These types of more profound effects improve our wellbeing over time.
The fragrances we pick – perfumes, candles, or other products – are not just about smelling good; they're about feeling good and becoming better, both now and in the future.
The Two Kinds of Happiness
Fragrances give us two types of happiness: one is immediate, and the other is deeper.
Hedonic happiness comes from things that give us pleasure and evoke good feelings.
Smelling a perfume, candle, or scent, you find pleasurable immediately boosts good feelings and mood. These scents provide momentary hedonic happiness through enjoyment and sensory pleasure.
Eudaimonic happiness comes from deeper feelings of meaning, purpose, and fulfilling our potential.
Certain scents can boost this kind of happiness – they remind us of special memories, bring us closer to people we care about, or make us feel more like ourselves. For example, a perfume that's become your signature scent could boost your confidence. Or, a room spray you always use when friends come over can make you feel more connected. And a smell that reminds you of your grandma's cookies might make you feel connected to your family roots.
Both types of happiness – immediate and deep – are part of why we love and choose certain fragrances.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Everyone loves a good story.
Especially our own, the one we keep telling ourselves about who we are and where we're going in life. This story is a collage of our desires, dreams, and ambitions; it's our personal narrative - and it plays a crucial role in defining our identity and shaping our choices - even our fragrance preferences.
Fragrances are more than just nice scents; they're storytellers.
But how can a fragrance tell a story? It's not about the notes or the ingredients but what these elements evoke in us. Your favorite scents reveal more about your inner world than you might imagine.
Let's consider someone who adores the scent of freshly cut grass. Maybe it's not just the aroma but the sense of freedom and youth it recalls. Conversely, a person drawn to a warm, woody perfume might be someone who values depth and complexity. These preferences aren't random; they align with our personal narratives. So, when we pick a fragrance, we're not just selecting a scent; we're choosing a storyteller.
In essence, the act of choosing a fragrance is an act of self-expression.
Like our favorite stories, our favorite fragrances can reveal much about our characters.
The perfumes and scented products we choose become subtle, sensory reflections of our life story. These fragrances resonate with our unique identity and help to fulfill our desired life-narrative.
It goes beyond the sensory pleasure they offer. Fragrances are a mirror to our personalities, our life experiences, and our aspirations. The invisible language of fragrances serves as storytellers that reveal our character traits in a way words often can't.
So, when we choose a fragrance, we're selecting more than a scent; we're picking a symbol that resonates with our desired life-narratives and inner archetypes.
The Characters Shaping Our Stories
We are unique characters in the story of our lives.
But did you know that these characters often fall into specific archetypal roles, as identified by the renowned psychologist Carl Jung? Understanding these archetypes is key to understanding our emotional needs and desires and how they shape our fragrance preferences.
Jung proposed twelve universal archetypes, each possessing unique aspirations, behaviors, and motivations.
- The Innocent
- The Everyman
- The Hero
- The Outlaw
- The Explorer
- The Creator
- The Ruler
- The Magician
- The Lover
- The Caregiver
- The Jester
- The Sage
These archetypes aren't just theoretical constructs; they are mirrors, reflecting our personal narratives - the stories we weave about who we are and who we aspire to be.
We're not just consumers; we're characters in our stories, guided by our archetypes.
To simplify and understand these archetypes, we can categorize them into four groups, each reflecting a broader emotional theme.
Joyful Optimists:
These characters seek joy, positivity, and a sense of wonder. They cherish simplicity, purity, and authenticity. Included in this group are:
- The Innocent: Desires safety and happiness, motivated by optimism and trust.
- The Explorer: Craves freedom and a fulfilling life, driven by the thrill of discovery.
- The Jester: Wants to live in the moment and enjoy life, fueled by joy and playfulness.
Harmonious Connectors:
These characters seek harmony, connection, and belonging. They desire communal bonds, inclusivity, and mutual respect. They include:
- The Everyman: Values connections and belonging, driven by realism and empathy.
- The Lover: Pursues intimacy and experiences, motivated by passion and appreciation.
- The Caregiver: Aims to help and protect others, guided by compassion and generosity.
Inspired Creators:
These characters value creativity, innovation, and self-expression. They are attracted to individuality, originality, and artistic expression. They include:
- The Creator: Desires to create something meaningful and enduring, driven by imagination and creativity.
- The Outlaw: Seeks disruption to create a new, better world fueled by radical freedom and rebellion.
- The Sage: Aims to use intelligence and analysis to understand the world, guided by wisdom and objectivity.
Empowered Achievers:
These characters value success, resilience, and personal growth. They are motivated by ambition, courage, and transformation. This group includes:
- The Hero: Strives for mastery and wants to leave a lasting impact, guided by competence and courage.
- The Ruler: Aspires for control and prosperity, driven by authority and responsibility.
- The Magician: Seeks to understand the fundamental laws of the universe, inspired by knowledge and power.
We can see a bit of ourselves in these archetypes.
They help us understand our desires and emotional needs. While we may primarily identify with one archetype, we often embody aspects of others, creating a rich and complex character - the unique lead in the stories we tell ourselves.
