The feature essay:

Fresh Horizons: A Fragrance for Today’s Chaos

The world feels chaotic right now, doesn’t it? Think about it: when was the last time life was truly under control?

From global events to our personal lives, uncertainty is everywhere, and sometimes, it can feel overwhelming. But I’ve always believed there’s opportunity in chaos if we choose to see it.

My belief inspired my latest creation: Fresh Horizons.

The idea behind Fresh Horizons came to me during a moment of reflection. I was thinking about how unpredictable life feels right now. Plans change, crazy news stories almost everyday, and my book still isn't finished. Instead of feeling paralyzed by all of this, I decided a new personal creative challenge. A challenge to turn my own feelings and observations about the world into something positive.

The Who, What & How:

When I started designing Fresh Horizons, I knew I had to connect with a specific kind of person. So I created a persona that I call “The Adaptive Sage.” Someone who see chaos not as a threat, but as an opportunity to grow. They want a fragrance that mirrors the complexity of their life - a scent that reflects clarity, balance, and resilience, even in unpredictable times.

The Adaptive Sage isn’t interested in just another “feel-good” fragrance. They crave something authentic. Something that reflects the complexity of their life.  They want something honest. A reminder of the truth - even though we can’t control chaos, we can find ways to thrive within it.

To bring this fragrance to life, I used my Emotional Fragrance Design (EFD) framework. EFD helps me think about fragrance not just as a combination of notes, but as an emotional experience. A true story that meets my customers specific emotional needs. In this case the fragrance needs to evoke feelings of clarity, calm, and adaptability.

So for Fresh Horizons, I focused on creating a balance between invigorating freshness, grounding stability, and a dynamic complexity that mirrors the ups and downs of life.

Notes with Purpose

Fragrances are like stories, unfolding in layers. That's why each note in Fresh Horizons was chosen to represent a different part of the emotional experience I wanted to create.

Top Notes: A Spark of Freshness

Grapefruit, ginger, and petitgrain—create an immediate burst of energy and clarity. These bright, zesty notes are designed to wake you up and grab your attention, like a sunny sky after a storm. To add a playful twist, I add in a touch of Tamarinen Base, to evoke a juicy sense of happiness and optimism.

Heart Notes: Complex and Adaptable

The middle layer is where the "feeling" of the fragrance starts to evolve. Here, I focus on Clary sage with just a touch of lavender to add an element of calm and peace. And to make it more "thoughtful," I added traces of galbanum, basil and black tea leaf to add an green, earthy, aromatic sense of control.

Base Notes: Grounding and Resilient

I grounded the fragrance with Iso E Super, vetiver acetate, and cedarwood oil. These woody notes evoke a sense of stability and strength without feeling too heavy. And to introduce a sense of fresh resilience I used a clean musk, Habanolide.

Every layer of Fresh Horizons was designed with the Adaptive Sage in mind. From the invigorating clarity of the top notes to the calming complexity of the heart and the grounding stability of the base, each element combines to tell a story of hope and thriving within chaos.

Finding Balance in the Chaos

Even though Fresh Horizons was a purely creative project, it wasn’t without its difficulties. My first attempts felt too sharp and lacked the grounding warmth I wanted because I was using too much grapefruit - especially Claritone combined with Corps Pamplemouse. But fortunately, I found a solution by adding in a driftwood accord based on Ambroxan and sandalwood - not only did it add soften the sharpness of the citrus notes - it added a touch of quiet confidence.

The trials I made and the materials I selected for Fresh Horizons were not based purely on my creative intuition.  Notes like basil and black tea leaf weren’t chosen randomly. These choices were guided by my EFD framework. By focusing on the desired emotional state of the Adaptive Sage and understanding their motivations, I created a true story. A fragrance with purpose and precision, unlocking possibilities that go beyond the surface of traditional fragrance design.

What to Expect: Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the materials I’ve mentioned. My upcoming book will break it all down for you - from detailed descriptions of each ingredient and their emotional impact to comprehensive tables outlining my Emotional Fragrance Design (EFD) framework. You’ll gain a clear understanding of how I use EFD to guide my creative process and how you can apply it to your own fragrance journey.

For me, this was more than a fun project. It demonstrates that even when you have complete creative freedom, structure matters. This is why I can honestly say that EFD helped me stay focused and refine the formula until all the layers felt harmonious and purposeful.

More Than Just a Nice Scent

Fragrance isn’t just something you wear or experience. It’s something you create, shape, and use to connect with your emotions and identity.

Whether you’re seeking clarity, calm, or confidence, the EFD journey starts with understanding the emotional power of scent. So take the first step. Think about the feelings you want to experience and the stories you want to tell through fragrance. The possibilities are endless. And perhaps, like me, you’ll discover something beautiful within the chaos.

How do you think fragrance can play a role in your personal journeys?
