Welcome to the 13th edition of More Than A Nice Scent!
Hello, Fragrant Friends,
In this edition, I'm excited (and nervous) to share a rough draft of a new essay with you.
"Your Scent, Your Story" is an invitation to see your perfume selections as chapters in your ongoing story of you.
This essay builds on my previous draft, "We Smell; Therefore, We Are." I'd love your feedback on this draft in the comments below - thanks!
Best regards,
Scott

Feature Rough Draft:
Your Scent, Your Story
Can your favorite fragrance tell your life's story?
The perfect fragrance reflects who you are and the experiences that have shaped you - who you really are.
When you find that perfume that clicks with your personality, it's your scent story. This special fragrance becomes part of your identity, like your unique signature representing your past, present, and future.
This is why choosing a fragrance should involve more than just picking a nice scent; it's about discovering and declaring your true essence.
First Fragrant Memories
Scents have a big impact on us when we're young children.
Even though we may not realize it, the fragrances we experience in our early years affect our memories and perceptions as we grow up. The smells we associate with childhood wonder, comfort, and joy get locked into our brains - the comforting smell of our mother's perfume, the fresh, earthy scent of a garden after rain. They quietly influence who we become.
One of my earliest fragrance memories is the rich, sweet aroma of the wooden cigar boxes my grandfather gave me as presents to store my collections of trading cards. They smelled so nice. When I opened the lid, the woody, nutty, spicy scent of tobacco wafted out.
To this day, when I smell tobacco, I think of my grandfather, a strong, stoic, hard-working man.
My early experiences with tobacco's aroma became a symbol of strength, resilience, and a deep sense of grounding.
Evolving Essences
Growing up, I spent a lot of time working in the garden and exploring the mountains and forests of Virginia and Colorado. Being in nature really shaped who I was.
I formed a deep bond with natural scents.
The scent of fresh-cut grass, moss, dirt and soil, tree bark mulch, pine needles, and crushed autumn leaves are some of my strongest scent memories from my teenage years.
Back then, I didn't realize it, but those woodsy, earthy fragrances were becoming symbols of confidence, resilience, and boldness for me. They were not just scent experiences; they were reflections of the down-to-earth man I was becoming.
Nature's Call
Thinking back now, it makes total sense why I loved Polo by Ralph Lauren so much. It reminds me of my grandfather's cigar boxes and the natural outdoor scents I grew up with.
Juniper Berries, Cedar Leaf, and Bergamot made me think of exploring the forests as a kid.
The pine needles and smoky birch tar were like the rustic campfire smoke on all my camping trips.
The Tobacco, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Cedar, and Vetiver grounded me with the memories of my grandfather's presence and the resilience of nature.
This perfume captured the woodsy smells that meant confidence and strength to me growing up. It combined the scents of my childhood in the perfect way.
Unexpected Influences
My love of natural scents growing up not only shaped my own fragrance tastes but also what I liked in women's perfumes.
When I was training to be a perfumer, I came across Feminite Du Bois by Shiseido. This trendsetting perfume blends bold woody-cedar notes - usually found in men's colognes - with delicate fruity-floral essences that are more common in women's fragrances.
The plum, peach, and spicy-sweet-cinnamon notes remind me of the cigar and pipe tobacco. And the cedar has that same woodsy, forest smell that makes me think of confidence and strength.
I loved this perfume.
To this day, I enjoy making and wearing woody fragrances that connect me back to my past and what I value.
Our Scented Selves
My personal fragrance story is unique, but it shows a common truth:
Scent is powerful for everyone. It links us to our past, helps us understand today, and connects to our future hopes.
So think about your own scent memories:
What smells remind you of being a kid?
How have your favorite fragrances changed over time?
What do those scents represent in your life now?
Your fragrance choice reflects more than personal taste; it's a reflection of your memories, personality, and dreams.

What smells remind you of being a kid?
Daffodils in our garden, lilacs. Snow. Celery and peppers in grandma’s kitchen.
How have your favorite fragrances changed over time?
When I was in college and first got interested in fragrance I tended to seek out very edgy and unique scents. Now I want to wear just what makes me happy, so if it’s something very sweet and mass market like a BBW lotion I’m fine with that! Also, perfume is very much about date nights for me. Because I’m a perfumer, I can’t wear fragrance at work, so it’s more of a weekend thing, so I like to wear things my husband will like. I think fragrance has become very individualistic, and it’s lost that romantic quality of being worn to smell good for the person you love.
What do those scents represent in your life now?
I think scents I encountered as a child are just very nostalgic. Daffodils will always be important to me because they make me think of Easter and new life. When my daughter was born we left the hospital they had all bloomed while I was in labor, so it makes me think of that special time too.
Hi Lauren,
I enjoyed reading your memories of the smells of daffodils and your grandma’s kitchen. It’s amazing how scents can bring us back to childhood moments so vividly.
Fragrance definitely reflects our changing relationships and life.
Personally, I’m curious to see how my preferences will evolve in the future.
Thanks for sharing your fragrance story!
