The Very Rough Draft:
Hype Couture: Turning Street Style into Scent
Creating a fragrance is more than just blending materials. It's about capturing good vibes. Let me tell you about a recent project where I created the debut fragrance for a trendy fashion brand from Berlin.
KreuzKraft is known for its cool streetwear that mixes high fashion with urban art. Their customers are young, creative people who love both art galleries and skate parks, seeking unique clothes that showcase their personality.
My job was to create a niche perfume that would appeal to these ideal customers – a scent that captures urban creativity and youthful energy. This project was a perfect chance to apply my Emotional Fragrance Design (EFD) principles.
In this case study, I’ll show you my thought-process and how EFD guided every choice I made. By the end, you'll see why Emotional Fragrance Design is more than a marketing concept for me - and why it's my creative manifesto.
The Challenge:
When I met with KreuzKraft's team, I was impressed by their vision. They didn’t just want a fragrance. They wanted to create a vibe that excites and inspires their customers.
Our customers wear our clothes to make a statement. They need a fragrance that’s equally bold and impactful," said Anna, the brand’s marketing manager.
Their ideal customers are young professionals and artists in their mid-20s to early 30s interested in fashion, music, and technology trends. They work in creative industries or tech startups, enjoy street art, and curate the perfect Instagram feed. They are always on top of the latest trends.
During the meeting, the creative director, Lukas, pulled out a sketchbook filled with graffiti-inspired designs. "Our clothes are more than just fashion,' he explained. 'They're a form of self-expression for our customers.
KreuzKraft’s style includes vibrant prints inspired by graffiti, bold shapes, and high-quality materials. They collaborate with street artists to create clothing that feels like wearable art.
To help me get a better idea of what they were looking for, the team showed me some short videos from their loyal customers.
In one video, an artist, Mika said, "I wear KreuzKraft clothes because they make me feel seen and understood. A fragrance that could do the same would be amazing."
Learning about the fashion label and its customers, I quickly realized these people weren't one-dimensional. They seemed like a mix of two different personalities: the Creator and the Rebel.
This project was going to be like solving a complex puzzle. Because the Creator and the Rebel each have their own set of emotional needs. I had to figure out where they overlapped. It wasn't going to be straightforward and simple, but I was excited about the chance to create a fragrance that would inspire dynamic creators and rebels.
Using my strong understanding of the brand and its customers, I began the exciting task of turning their identity into a fragrance.
What to Expect: In the final book, I'll reveal my step-by-step method for understanding the unique archetypes and their "Emotional Fingerprint" of your target customers. This special technique is key to making fragrances that that speak to people's minds and hearts.
The Scent of Creative Rebellion
To create the perfect fragrance, I had to understand the Creator-Rebel mindset. What drives them? What are their core desires and values?
Step 1: Understanding the Mindset
These aren't your average consumers. Here's what my intuition was telling me about the mindset of Creator-Rebels:
- Unique: They want to stand out from the crowd with their distinct style.
- Inspired: They need motivation to fuel their artistic dreams.
- Authentic: They want to always be true to themselves.
- Rebellious: They want to play by and live an exciting life by their own rules.
- Expressive: They seek the freedom to fully express their emotions and creativity without limits.
By identifying these emotional motivators, I could create a fragrance that wasn't just a nice scent but an extension of their identity. They needed a fragrance as dynamic and bold as they are.
Step 2: Crafting Hype Couture
Now that I knew how our Creator-Rebels want to feel, I had to pick materials that matched their feelings. This is where making emotional designed fragrance is really cool. I had to think about each feeling and choose the best fitting scents that go with it.
For example, their desire for uniqueness called for unexpected note combinations. The need for inspiration demanded vibrant, energizing scents. Authenticity required natural, grounding elements. Rebellion asked for bold, unconventional choices.
With these connections in mind, I decided to go with a fragrance concept called "Hype Couture." Then I began the fun process of using the EFD Framework and my scent reflection library as guides, to select fragrance notes that would bring the Creator-Rebel spirit to life in a fragrance.
Top Notes: Black Pepper and Cardamom
- Because they add an edgy kick, reflecting young urban energy
- To spark creativity and excitement.
Heart Notes: Dark Plum and Coffee
- To evoke a sense of standing out.
- These notes fulfill the desire for uniqueness.
Base Notes: Cedarwood and Sandalwood
- These represent urban roots and authenticity.
- They evoke confidence and stability.
Each element of Hype Couture was carefully chosen not just for its scent, but for the emotions it evokes, aiming to make the wearer feel creative, confident, and unique.
What to Expect: In the final book, I'll share with you my private Scent Reflection Library to help you understand the potential emotional impact of over 100 fragrance materials and accords.
Step 3: Putting It All Together
To balance these notes into a harmonious structure that speaks to the hearts of Creator-Rebels, I decided to blend these notes to create a woody-spicy fragrance with gourmand hints. I picked this family because it captures both the authentic warmth and edginess of the Creator-Rebel type. The woody base feels real, and the spicy and sweet gourmand elements add boldness and excitement. I designed this fragrance to empower the wearer and capture the essence of urban creativity and youthful energy.
Major Cliffhanger! The Story Is Not Over!
In the final book, I will reveal the rest of the story behind Hype Couture, detailing the testing, fine-tuning, and presentation of my final creation.
What to Expect:
Testing: Learn how customer feedback helped shape the final creation, making sure it matched their unique identities.

Love your thought process. Looking forward to the actual book. Will it be an ebook, or will there be the option to buy a paper version? My preference is to hold a book in my hands.
Thank you for your kind words, Victoria! It’s always a bit of a relief to hear that my thoughts make sense to others. And yes, there will definitely be a print version of the book. Take care!
