Welcome to the 46th edition of the More Than A Nice Scent
This one’s big!
Something's wrong with most fragrances these days. You’re not imagining it. In this edition, I share how I stopped chasing trends and started predicting the emotional future of perfume.
If you want to predict the future of perfume, follow feelings.
You’ll also get a first look at a powerful new idea I call Perfume Mindscaping - and why it might just be the next revolution in fragrance.
Warm regards,
Scott

The feature essay:
The Next Revolution in Perfume
Most fragrance choices aren’t authentic!
Sounds trendy, right? But hear me out - because authenticity is more important than you might think.
Think about how people typically view fragrance:
- The average guy on the street: "Perfume? I just use what my girlfriend gave me for Christmas. I spray it on before going out with friends or to work. Never really thought about why I choose one over another, to be honest. As long as I don't smell bad, I'm good."
- Average Jane: "I have a few different perfumes. I wear a light floral one to work, and save the stronger stuff for date nights. Mostly, I just want to smell nice without being too obvious about it."
- The fragrance professional: "I love what I do, but there's a lot of pressure in this business. We're always chasing trends. I might create something I think is amazing, but sometimes I have to choose between my creative vision and what the marketing team wants."
Notice something missing?
All of these perspectives, while accurate, completely overlook one crucial point - emotional authenticity.
We're Missing Something Big
Here's my take: The fragrance industry has a problem.
Yes, there are rich traditions, great materials, and impressive technical skills, but there's a growing problem - the gap between the art of perfumery and how fragrances make us feel.
The Real Problem
Too often, companies chase trends instead of creating scents that actually connect with people. They focus on:
- What's selling right now
- What celebrities are promoting
- What looks good in ads
Meanwhile, what people really want are fragrances that feel truly "them."
You might know that frustration. Standing in a perfume shop, surrounded by hundreds of bottles but unable to find something truly 'you.'
Why Emotional Connection Matters
When a fragrance really connects with someone, something special happens:
- They don't just wear it - they bond with it
- It becomes part of their daily life
- It weaves into their memories
- They tell friends about it (free marketing!)
This isn't just about making better art - it makes business sense too.
The Solution We Need
So how do we fix this gap between nice scents and ones that we truly love?
You probably guessed it, I'm going to say: Emotional Fragrance Design (EFD) - the true heart of perfumery.
But emotional connection alone isn't enough. We need to see what's coming next.
The SCENT Method: Predicting Tomorrow's Fragrance Hits
Recently, I shared on LinkedIn exactly how I'm spotting future fragrance trends. Here’s a quick look into my step-by-step process:
Want to spot the next big fragrance trend—before everyone else?
You don't need a huge marketing team. You just need the right system.
Most brands chase superficial trends—and end up launching scents nobody buys.
That's why I created the SCENT Method. It's a simple, 15-minute weekly check to see what's trending and why people love it emotionally.
Here's how SCENT works:
S – Spot emotional shifts (comfort, excitement, nostalgia)
C – Capture clues quickly (Fragrantica, TikTok, Reddit)
E – Evidence emotional connections ("pistachio" signals playful luxury)
N – Note clear patterns (3+ sources = real trend)
T – Turn it into profit (People buy perfumes that give them desired feelings)
Instead of just saying “fig is trending,” say “fig makes people feel safe and nostalgic.”
With SCENT, I accurately predicted trends like:
Clean musks tied to wellness
Savory gourmands becoming popular
Green notes turning bold and strong
Today's successful brands don't chase trends. They predict what people will feel next.
No guessing. No boring reports. Just easy-to-use emotional insights.
The Next Big Thing
Here's what I'm seeing next…
Using a more detailed version of this method, I've identified a powerful new fragrance trend that's just starting to emerge on the horizon. And I'm predicting this is going to change the way we experience fragrance forever:
I call it "Perfume Mindscaping."
What exactly is "Perfume Mindscaping"?
Right now, most people treat perfume like a passive accessory. You spray it on, forget about it, and hope you smell good. That's it.
But here's what's coming next: fragrance as an active tool for shaping your day.
Perfume Mindscaping is the practice of intentionally choosing scents that help you become who you want to be in any given moment. It's using fragrance to step into different versions of yourself - confident, adventurous, calm, whatever you need.
Instead of just grabbing whatever smells good, you intentionally choose a perfume that supports your goals for that day.
Why Mindscaping is Inevitable
This shift is already happening - we just haven't named it yet.
Consumers are done with one-size-fits-all everything. They want personalized playlists, custom workout plans, and curated news feeds. Why would fragrance be any different?
The evidence is everywhere if you know where to look.
Fragrance "wardrobing" is exploding. People aren't buying one signature scent anymore - they're building collections for different moods and moments.
Layering has gone mainstream. What started as a niche hobby is now taught in Sephora tutorials. People are already mixing scents to create custom experiences.
Niche brands are winning with stories. Le Labo sells the feeling of a Brooklyn loft. Maison Margiela sells cozy winter evenings. Consumers pay premium prices for emotional experiences, not just nice smells.
The wellness industry paved the way. People already accept that what they consume affects how they feel. The leap to "what you smell affects who you become" isn't that big.
We're moving toward a world where everything is intentional. People want to be active participants in their own experience, not passive consumers.
Mindscaping isn't some far-off concept. It's the natural next step for an industry that's already moving in this direction.
Mindscaping in Action: A Transformation
Remember our average guy from the beginning? Let's see how his fragrance life changes.
Before Mindscaping:"I just use what my girlfriend gave me for Christmas. I spray it on before going out with friends or to work."
After Mindscaping:Same guy, completely different approach.
Monday morning - Big presentation: He reaches for a confidence-boosting woody blend with cedar and vetiver. Not because it smells nice, but because it helps him step into his "Empowering Leader" mindset. The scent grounds him, makes him feel more authoritative.
Saturday adventure: Time for that fresh, energizing citrus blend. He's activating his "Energizing Spirit" - the part of him that's ready for anything. The bright notes match his mood and amplify his sense of possibility.
The Process:
- He identifies what version of himself he wants to embody
- He chooses a scent that actively supports that emotional state
- He uses fragrance as a tool for personal transformation
It's not about smelling good anymore. It's about becoming who he needs to be.
That's the difference between wearing fragrance and practicing mindscaping.
Practical Glimpse for Perfumers:
Let’s take this from concept to reality.
Here's how an 'Empowering Leader' fragrance might look—a scent crafted to boost confidence, clarity, and authoritative presence during pivotal professional moments, such as important presentations:

Why This Works:
The bright opening creates an immediate confidence spark. The aromatic heart projects calm and confidence. And the long-lasting grounding base evokes authority and stability.
The Commercial Reality
Here's the bottom line: authenticity wins.
Consumers are getting smarter. They notice the difference between a brand that truly understands their emotional needs and one that's just chasing the latest trend.
The brands that embrace mindscaping first will own the next decade. While everyone else is still copying TikTok viral scents, forward-thinking companies will be creating fragrances that actually transform how people feel.
This isn't just good for consumers - this actually makes business sense too.
Full Circle to Authenticity
Remember where we started? "Most fragrance choices aren't authentic!"
Now imagine this:
Our average guy no longer grabs whatever's closest. He's actively choosing scents that support who he wants to be that day.
Average Jane isn't limited to "light for work, strong for dates." She's crafting specific emotional experiences for every aspect of her life.
The fragrance professional isn't trapped between creativity and marketing demands. They're creating meaningful connections that actually matter to people.
That's what happens when fragrance choices become authentic. When we stop treating fragrance as decoration and start using it as transformation.
Perfume Mindscaping isn't just the next trend. It's the return to what fragrance was always meant to be: a tool for becoming who we truly want to be.

Hi Scott, you’re absolutely right.
I have incorporated some of these emotional ideas for a while now into my bespoke customers fragrance blends. Making Bespoke gives the opportunity to personally ask clients these questions of how they want to feel and project themselves.
A female client wore her ‘green’ fresh uplifting fragrance when giving a business presentation to a group of mainly male businessmen. She reported she felt more confident from this perfume and states she wants to buy another as she has almost finished the bottle.
I love this because it’s so true. Enjoy your break and look forward to when your book is coming out🌸😊
